Chrome just won a legal fight for its life. In September 2025, a federal judge could have forced Google to sell off the browser entirely. He didn't — Judge Amit Mehta refrained from ordering Google to sell off Chrome, though he did order the company to end exclusive deals that made Google the default search engine on phones and other devices, asNPR reported at the time. Google kept its crown jewel. But here's the twist nobody expected: the real threat to Chrome was never the courtroom. It's a browser that talks back.

Walk into any tech forum right now and you'll see the same three names on repeat: Atlas, Comet, Dia. OpenAI's Atlas browser puts ChatGPT inside your address bar. Perplexity's Comet reads your tabs, books your appointments, and answers questions with citations attached. Dia, from the team that built Arc, wants you to "chat with your tabs" instead of just opening them. None of these is a toy anymore.

So, is Chrome cooked? Not exactly. Chrome still holds somewhere between 65% and 70% of global browser share, a lead no single rival has dented. That's the paradox of 2026: everyone's talking about AI browsers, yet almost nobody has actually switched away from the one they already use.

Why the "browser wars" framing might be wrong

Calling this a war implies two armies fighting for the same hill. What's actually happening is stranger. Chrome isn't standing still — it's absorbing the threat. Google folded Gemini directly into Chrome, giving users agentic features without asking them to download anything new. That's the quiet advantage incumbents have always had: zero switching cost. Why install Atlas when Gemini already lives where you are?

Meanwhile, the challengers are carving out specific loyalties rather than mass migration. Comet wins people who care about sourced, citation-first answers. Atlas wins the ChatGPT-devoted crowd. Brave Leo wins the privacy-first holdouts. None of that adds up to a Chrome killer. It adds up to fragmentation — a market where the "best" browser depends entirely on which AI company you already trust.

And trust is the real bottleneck, not features. A Pew Research Center survey found that roughly seven-in-ten Americans predict AI will make their personal information less secure, while just 3% say it will lead to their information being more secure — findings laid out in Pew's2026 report on Americans and AI. An AI browser, by design, needs access to your emails, calendar, payment info, and entire browsing history — far more than any browser has ever asked for before. Convincing people to hand that over to a startup, rather than to Google (which already has most of it anyway), is a much harder sell than shipping a slick demo.

There's also a regulatory shadow over all this. Even though Google avoided a breakup, Judge Mehta ruled against the most severe consequences the Department of Justice had proposed, including a forced sale of Chrome, and the ruling came nearly a year after he found Google held an illegal monopoly in internet search, per CNBC'scoverage of the ruling. The competitive pressure from AI companies clearly factored into how lightly the court ultimately treated Chrome.

So, 2027: does Chrome still matter?

Almost certainly, yes — but "mattering" won't mean the same thing it did in 2020. Chrome will likely remain the default for most everyday browsing, propped up by distribution deals and sheer inertia. What's changed is that "default" no longer means "only option worth having." A growing slice of power users will run a second, AI-native browser alongside Chrome for specific tasks — deep research, multi-step errands, inbox triage.

The bigger question isn't whether Chrome survives. It's whether "browser" remains a useful category at all once every one of them can act on your behalf. By 2027, we may stop asking which browser we use and start asking which AI we trust to drive.
